Usually, I hit November feeling kind of blah about things, but this year seems a bit different. I dragged a few days after my 10K race, but last Friday, November 1, I felt pretty energized and ready for a new month. It doesn't hurt that Thanksgiving is right around the corner and, yes, I'm totally looking forward to the break. But a positive attitude in November? I'll take it!
Most articles that come my way via Active.com talk about the off-season as if it's starting now. I think that I had a serious break in August, September and October. Not that I was a total couch potato, but I didn't try to force too many workouts or stick to a rigid schedule. So, now that it's November, I feel somewhat ready to recommit to to the whole swimbikerun thing. In past years, I've sort of fallen off the swim and bike wagon during the fall, but I wanted to keep those skills somewhat sharper this fall so that 2014 doesn't come as a shock to the system.
So, after flirting with the idea of joining the Rose Bowl Master's Swim group and attending a few practices "just to see" in October, I plunked down the cash and joined up. Not that I'm going all that often, but the workouts are HARD and they push me, in a good way. I still feel intimidated about the experience, but I actually don't mind that I'm in the slowest lane. Well, I did the first time I went because one of the other people in the lane was a total ass, but since then, things have been quite fun. Even better, I think that I've already seen some results. Amazing how practicing harder and longer reaps rewards.
Also, now that the 10k is out of the way, I'd like to settle back into longer runs and get more miles under my legs. I enjoyed speedier and shorter runs in September and October, but I have a half-marathon in January that I'd actually like to train for it. What a concept! So, this past Sunday, I pounded out 8 miles - my longest run since July. That piece of information depresses me a bit, but the run felt fantastic, so I'll take that as a positive sign. I should see double-digits again soon which will be fun!
And, the third skill, biking. Ah, the weak link, always. But I'm slightly more dedicated to my saddle at this point than I was last year. Having the trainer at home does let my legs do more spinning on my bike which should help in the long run. I realize that there are TONS of videos and resources out there and I can/should probably push myself a bit more on it, but as long as I work up a good sweat and get my heart rate spiked, I'm okay with the sessions at home at this point. And as long as I can get outside a few times this month on the bike, it will be tons better than last year (when I logged in zero rides in November. Lame).
So, that is the swim/bike/run off-season for me. I haven't turned into a total slug, but there is still time, especially with Christmas right around the corner! But even more exciting this year, my body has stayed relatively healthy (please don't let this jinx me!). I continue to get the occasion "tune-up" for my calf and foot with ART, but so far I've continued to keep a flare-up of plantar fasciitis at bay. Also, my knee has cooperated. I plan to see the knee doc before Christmas just to make sure that all is kosher before I spend a day or two skiing on it, but no cortisone shot since the end of January - this is the longest stretch that I've gone since I started getting them, so I'll call that progress!
Finally, a few "inspirational" thoughts that made me smile recently:
"Paris. New York. Milan. The fashion Meccas of the world don't want to see your muddy plaid anywhere near their glitzy runways. That's okay. You don't want to see their Louis Vuitton stilettos on your trail. Behold, trail-inspired apparel for style-conscious women with active lifestyles." This was from the Clymb.com - one of my favorite on-line discount websites for gear.
And last night, as we were drinking margaritas and sharing great company, the waiter said "At Amigos, everything is possible here."
Yes, I definitely like the idea of everything being possible, even in November!

November!
Am I the only person who is pretty damn excited that it's November? Is it terrible that one of the reasons that I'm so looking forward to the month is due to a long weekend (Veteran's Day weekend - we have an in-service that is pretty creative this year) and, of course, Thanksgiving. While we love traveling and visiting family and friends and all that this entails, we have zero plans for Thanksgiving weekend, and I cannot say how appealing that is to me. Lame? Maybe, but also indicative of my need for a total break.
November 1st, yesterday, came and went with two notable items for me. First of all, I finished 18 student recommendations, a record for me. Shew! Most of the recommendations were quite good, some were even excellent, but a few were probably weaker than they would have been if I had been able to take a day or two more with them. I know that I nailed some of them, but I do wish that I'd had a day or two more for the final 3-4 letters.

The second item of note is that I signed up for this event:
So excited about Vineman! It's crazy that I signed up for a race that is in mid-July. Even crazier that it sold out yesterday - the first day that registration opened. After many conversations about 2013 with myself and with Michael ("I want to do an Ironman, I can't do an Ironman, it would be great to do an Ironman next year, this is a ridiculous idea for about a thousand reasons but I can think of a one or two great reasons...."), I - we - decided that such a goal was not a viable option. So, I've set my sights on two long-course races. I'm waiting to sign up for the other one, but my impatience got the best of me for Vineman. Turns out, that was a good thing!
As for the "why" - well, a lot of it has to do with timing. At the moment, I plan to head south to Nicaragua again in August and while I loved my experience at the Boulder 70.3, I don't want that race to cut into the Nicaragua trip. I will, however, still have time once summer break starts to both ramp up my training AND taper before the race in mid-July. Also, Vineman seems like it will be a great venue. California wine country - why not?! And the course sounds great.
I can't wait for July, but in the meantime, I'm focusing on my trail race November 18th. I pushed myself in October to run longer (and slower). This definitely isn't marathon training and makes me realize that tackling 26.2 would be rough (and I have no idea how I did it so many years ago) as I find that setting out on the double digit runs is daunting for me! I maxed out at a 13.5 mile long run two weeks ago, and I plan on a 15 or so mile run tomorrow. I'm excited and nervous about it and am trying to remember what a friend said - think about it as a fast hike.
So, fast hiking, here I come!

A change in the air
The weather has definitely signaled a new month, as rains and colder temperatures hit Southern CA. We lit our first fire of the fall/winter season last night, and I, for one, am looking forward to falling back this evening (or morning) so that it isn't dark when I leave the house for the long walk to work. I had hoped for some snow tipped peaks today, and while there must be snow on Mt. Baldy and some of the higher peaks, no such luck right around our whereabouts. Still, the day after a rain storm makes me appreciate living where I do - it has been a gorgeous day. We just walked the boys around the neighborhood and enjoyed the clear, late afternoon sky.
The cooler temperatures and more fall-like chill in the air also informed our weekly farmers' market run. While I continued to buy tomatoes and strawberries through to last week, this week, I stocked up on apples, a few persimmons, and tons of root vegetables. Yep, it is no longer early fall! We'll be making soups around here soon.
Speaking of the weather, it is supposed to rain again tomorrow, which I would normally welcome, but I am hoping that the rains hold off at least until later in the afternoon. I am running a 10K - my first in a while (!) - and would like to enjoy a rain-free run. It is a selfish hope, I realize, because we can always use the rain around here. For myself, I know that I would enjoy the run a bit more if I don't have to deal with weather.
But, if the weather doesn't cooperate, it should be a great run, no matter what - flat, which will hopefully translate to "fast" for me, but I don't want to bank on it. I did this run last year, but they changed the course a bit - it used to be a 5 miler and now it's a 10k. A part of me wishes that it were still a 5-miler so that I could compare my performance. I guess I'm being picky these days, complaining about the weather, not satisfied with the course...
Obviously I need to 'get over it' and just run!
